NRWege ins Studium – Integration of refugees at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia starting from 2023

Scholarships for students with refugee background

The South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences awards scholarships to full-time students with a refugee background who have no other possibility to secure their living and who meet the requirements to successfully complete their studies as part of the programme “NRWege ins Studium – Support of students with refugee background at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia starting from 2023”. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Universities in North Rhine-Westphalia have been increasingly committed to integrating refugees who are willing and able to study in a degree course since 2017.

It repeatedly became clear that after successfully completing preparatory language courses, a new demand for support arose with the transition to a degree course. Thus, despite excellent performances and a high level of motivation, enrolled students with a refugee background often face overwhelming obstacles in financing their living costs. These financial obstacles have the effect that, despite a good forecast of successfully completing a degree course, it is not started or continued.

Therefore, one key aspect of the scholarship programme is the financing of studies for refugees in order to successfully integrate refugees who are willing and able to study into a degree course at a higher education institution in NRW in order to lead them to a degree in the long term.

This is why the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences is granting scholarships for the summer semester 2023 for full-time students with a refugee background who are highly motivated and likely to succeed in their studies and have no other means to secure their livelihood. Depending on the financial situation of the applicants, the scholarships are split into full scholarships and partial scholarships.
