German Language Skills
The language of instruction at the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences is German, with the exception of our international study courses which are entirely taught in English. Please check the individual language requirements for your desired degree course beforehand.
A prerequisite for the enrolment of international applicants in the German courses is sufficient proficiency in the German language. These language skills must be proven by a German test. Only certificates of successful completion of one of the following examinations are accepted as proof at the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences:
- German as foreign language- test (TestDaF)
- language certificate of Goethe-Institute (ZOP) or telc GmbH
- the German language assessment for higher education (DSH)
The required level depends on the study programme as shown in this overview.
Where can these tests be taken?
- Find your TestDaf-Centre
- Goethe-Institute
You will be able to find these test centres in many different countries, and in many different cities within Germany.

- German universities (DSH- Prüfung)
Please note that DSH- exams are not offered by every German university and that the universities often only admit the applicants to this exam if they fulfill very special conditions.
The
Volkshochschule, which can be found in most larger towns in Germany, also offers a wide range of German language courses.
There is also the possibility to learn German online at the
Deutsch-Uni Online.
Free German courses are offered by the International Office of the Fachhochschule Südwestfalen. International full-time students can, if required, participate in order to improve or update their language skills. These courses do not aim at taking the German test which is the prerequisite for enrolment in a course of study, but they rather contribute to making progress with your own studies in Germany.
