Was ist Landnutzungsökologie?
Der Großteil der globalen eisfreien Landoberfläche steht unter direkter menschlicher Nutzung. Allein die Landwirtschaft (Grün- und Ackerland) beansprucht mehr als 40% unserer Landoberfläche, gefolgt von Wald. Vor diesem Hintergrund versucht die Landnutzungsökologie die Auswirkungen von verschiedenen Landnutzungssystemen auf Ökosysteme zu verstehen und unter Berücksichtigung ökonomischer und gesellschaftlicher Rahmenbedingungen ganzheitlich zu bewerten. Hierzu werden unter anderem die Konsequenzen von Landnutzungsänderungen (z. B. Wald zu Grünland) und unterschiedlichen Landnutzungsintensitäten (intensiv bis extensiv) sowie von gezielten Kombinationen verschiedener Landnutzungensysteme (z. B. Agroforstwirtschaft) und deren Übergängen (z. B. Saumstrukturen) auf Ökosystemebene untersucht.
Der Begriff Landnutzungsökologie wurde an der Fachhochschule Südwestfalen entwickelt, welche mit Prof. Dr. Lukas Beule die weltweit erste und derzeit einzige Professur für Landnutzungsökologie besitzt. Das übergeordnete Ziel der Professur ist es, resiliente Landnutzungssysteme zu identifizieren und zu entwickeln, welche die funktionelle Integrität von Ökosystemen langfristig erhalten oder fördern. Weiterhin werden mit systemübergreifenden Ansätzen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Landnutzungen unter Berücksichtigung der Landschaftskonfiguration erforscht. Hierzu werden insbesondere ober- und unterirdische Organismengemeinschaften und ihre funktionelle Biodiversität sowie die von ihnen regulierten Ökosystemprozesse ins Zentrum der Forschung gestellt.
